With just two basic Tunisian crochet stitches you can make this little shawl. After a few repeats you'll get the hang of this pattern, so expect easy crocheting ahead. If you want to learn the Tunisian crochet skills first, stick with the one-color option. If you're an adventurous maker, go with the two-colored striped version. Choose your yarn colors by browsing your stash you need just a little amount.

The Creatief Kerchief is diamond shaped and can be worn in several ways around the neck which makes it a versatile accessory. When wrapped around your neck there are several ways to tie or bind it – a kerchief-/scarf ring works well too. Consider wearing it as a headband, belt or bracelet as well.

Creatief (pronouncement: kree-A-tief) is Dutch for "to create" and "creatively".

Dimensions

Instructions are given to make the kerchief bigger and/or use all your available yarn.

Kerchief measures:

Width: 20 cm/7.75 inch

Length: 120 cm/47.25 inch

Yarn and Yardage

Light fingering weight yarn, in one or two colors. For a kerchief size you need no more than 50 grams of yarn in total.

Sample 1, two colors striped version:

Holst Supersoft (50% merino wool and 50% Shetland wool; 287m/314yd per 50g skein).

Yardage:

MC 130 m/140 yds, 23g in colorway Indigo (033).

CC 70 m/80 yds, 12,5 g in colorway Ecru (098).

Sample 2, single-color version:

Annell Super Extra Color (75% superwash wool and 25% polyamide; 420m/460yd per 100g skein).

Yardage:

190 m/210 yds, 46g in colorway 2912 (blue variegated).

Note: Tunisian crochet creates a dense fabric so when substituting yarn use a light-fingering weight for a similar lightweight kerchief.

Gauge

17 stitches and 15 rows = 10 cm/4” in pattern repeat (2 rows Tss, 1 row Tfs).

Obtaining gauge is not crucial for this design, as long as you’re happy with the drape of the fabric. If your gauge differs greatly, your yarn usage and the final dimensions will be affected.

Tools

  • 5 mm Tunisian crochet hook with stopper or cable or preferred hook size when working with fingering weight yarn. Note: If you don't have a Tunisian crochet hook, you can substitute with a standard crochet hook (without ergonomic handle) and a rubber band wrapped over and over at the end. At the widest point the stitches might be a little bunched up on the hook after a forward pass.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Locking stitch marker(s)
